Origin of The Spaghetti Monster, Bob.

The Spaghetti Monster started with my oldest daughter eating pasta as a baby. Those who have kids know that small child + spaghetti = hilarious results, or as I saw it a Spaghetti Monster.

The Spaghetti Monster was born, and grew as it became a go to joke for everything.

  • Listing off the items we need for school: backpack, snack, water bottle, Spaghetti Monster (instant laughter).
  • “Dad, guess who I played with at school?” “The Spaghetti Monster”.
  • And so on and so on.

So where did the name Bob come from, it does seem like an odd name for a monster made of pasta. Well I am notoriously bad at remembering names, like goldfish level bad memory. My go to for any unknown name is Bob (so much so that it has made its way into our Dungeons and Dragons sessions). So, what better name for a monster that is everywhere than a name I use for everyone.

Where did the spaghetti monster bob get his look? The unique monster illustration style comes from a month long art series I did on Instagram a few years back. I committed to drawing a new monster every day for the month of October. This was the first time Bob had a true form, before then The Spaghetti Monster was only known in name. This series helped to create many of Bob’s friends, like Eyee, OEOHFPPE, BooYah and others. I still create new monsters from time to time, Bob always needs more friends to play with.

Thanks to encouragement and help from my amazing wife and two creative daughters I decided to turn The Spaghetti Monster Bob into a book series for kids. Starting with an activity book (because I always enjoyed those) and branching out to other adventures. I always have a few stories in the works and even have a few underdevelopment by my daughters (stay tuned for Spaghetti Monster and the art project).

I also want to share a special shout out to my mom for artistic help, she’s always keeping my perspective honest (or as close to honest as I can achieve). And another shout out to my Aunt Wiz (Liz) who I’ve tapped for her extensive knowledge as a school library working directly with the book’s audience.
